Anonymous asked: I can't help but notice that you are very passionate about the English language and that you try to promote proper use and appreciation through your blog, but I was wondering what kind of direct service projects you do that you would recommend. I've heard really good things about some places and I thought I would find out which ones are your favorites to volunteer with. I want to actually help real kids, not just donate money!

I’m super glad you’re looking to get charitable! The volunteer work I do these days is in Boston, but my favorite ways to promote modern literacy in children include volunteering after school with kids to help them develop their reading and writing skills (my sorority has a relationship with one of the many Citizens Schools), donating books that I loved to elementary schools or local churches, and (yes) giving private monetary donations to school districts and philanthropies like Reading is Fundamental. Especially right now, with my co-op and other activities, I’m really busy and don’t have a lot of time to volunteer, but I know that giving money to a school district in the name of their English program or book club will help them to provide reading materials, workbooks, and other supplies to help get kids reading. Encouraging a local elementary school to host a Scholastic Book Fair is also a really great way to spark enthusiasm and interest for books in kids. I’ve also always wanted to start a youth book club to meet every week at a library and talk about what we’re reading and why we love it, but this is something for when my schedule is a bit more flexible. I hope that helps! You are awesome <3
